PERFORMERS
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER?
Any high schools located in Durham are eligible to be part of Buzz. A representative from the school's music program (i.e. band director, president of the school music club, principal, etc.) should register on behalf of his/her program via the form to the right of this text. The skill level of the program does not matter. On the other hand, communication with Buzz, adherence to the schedule, and preparedness for the performance are essential to a successful live music performance. Students must also respect the audience and follow specific precautions that may exist for an institution that they are performing for.
WHY SHOULD WE JOIN BUZZ?
Music education—especially live performance—has been proven to be beneficial for students in a multitude of ways. First, students get into the habit of goal setting for planned musical performances. They practice with purpose and reflect on their progress to meet the goal of performing successfully. Second, students learn how to conquer fear and take risks as they experience stage anxieties. Third, students gain self-confidence with live feedback (claps and cheers) from the audience who are adults or strangers. Last but not least, due to the gained self-confidence, the quality of students’ school lives is increased. By providing many opportunities for local high school music ensembles (which often lack connections with non-academic institutions) to perform in front of a live audience, Buzz visions that the participating students will achieve these skills. Additionally, students can have experiences outside of their classrooms or practice rooms to meet and connect with different community members, increasing their awareness of the community.
