AUDIENCE
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER?
Any institutions in Durham that want to enjoy live music performance are eligible to be part of Buzz. Institutions that can register include but are not limited to hospitals, prisons, senior centers, and orphanages. A representative from the institution should register via the form to the right of this text. Communication with Buzz, adherence to the schedule, and respect for the student performers are essential to a successful live music performance.
Some things to consider before registering are the following:
-
Do you have a venue for a performance to happen? If so, how many performers can there be?
-
Are there chairs and stands for the performers and audience? If so, how many?
-
Is my neighborhood tolerable with live music performance and its possible loudness?
If your answer is "no" to any of these questions but you still wish to be part of Buzz, please don't hesitate to register and reach out to us! Buzz will find a way for you to bring your institution a live music performance.
WHY SHOULD WE JOIN BUZZ?
Community members can be mentally healthier and feel belonged. The mental health effect was demonstrated in an experiment conducted by researchers Daisy Fancourt and Aaron Williamon where 117 volunteers went to two concerts of Eric Whitacre, a famous American composer in choral, orchestral, and wind ensemble music. The result for both concerts was that overall levels of the stress hormones decreased. In another study, participants undergoing chemotherapy treatment had lower levels of “anxiety, fear, fatigue, relaxation, and diastolic blood pressure” which improved their quality of life even during the treatment. Several other studies also confirm improvements in mental health from listening to live performances such as better sleep quality and positive mood. Furthermore, since live performance is something that all community members can enjoy, having it delivered to those who are unable to have access to it (with reasons such as illness, financial scarcity, and physical disability) can increase the sense of belongingness.
